Maldivian seamen are very sober in character, obedient, capable and highly experienced seagoing men by nature. They are well trained under STCW 78/95 Convention with Seaman Book issued from the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Male', Maldives and who always tries to abstain from organized strikes etc., which will hamper smooth operation of vessels.

Maldivian seamen's force at given time on board foreign going vessels are more 2,000 in numbers. They serve on board all kinds of vessels and tonnage in different parts of the world.

Current average salary scale paid by various principals, prevail at the moment are;

US $ 1,400.00 2/E
US $ 1,100.00 3/E
US $ 800.00 4/E
US $ 700.00 5/E
US $ 480.00 Oiler
US $ 300.00 Wiper
US $ 480.00 A/B
US $ 300.00 O/S
US $ 500.00 Bosun
US $ 350.00 Messman
US $ 480.00 2nd Cook

Some management pays fixed O/T, after working for compulsory 8 or 12 hours, not less than 10% of the monthly salary. Others pay US $ 57.00 per month for junior ranks and US $ 100.00 for senior ranks.

Bonus for work done extra, is also a benefit some principals pay.

In case of open O/T, some pays US $ 1.00 to US $ 1.25 x minimum 100 hours to maximum 120 hours monthly.

Whereas agency fee is concerned between principals and recruiting agents, average fee prevails currently is US $ 100.00 per head recruited, or 10% commission on total salary of all crew recruited at a time or a lumpsum amount agreed upon.
